Still Lifes: Techniques and Style : An Examination of Paintings from the Rijksmuseum by Rijksmuseum (Netherlands), Arie Wallert

The stunning beauty and variety of seventeenth-century Dutch still lifes evoke all sorts of technical questions that are justified on the basis of around twenty paintings by the Rijksmuseum. Following the exhibition of Still Lifes in the Rijksmuseum, extensive research was carried out into the painterly aspects of the genre. In this publication, edited by curator Arie Wallert, most of the results are included. After a short introduction, two chapters follow in succession the method and materials of the still life, and the art-historical sources of the techniques and materials are discussed. Then follows the catalog section in which 18 paintings are discussed in detail. This publication provides a very enlightening insight into the technique and style of still life painting. For anyone with an interest in 17th-century painting, this publication is a must. With 134 images, of which 114 in color.
